Are You Really Listening to Your Customers?

a child covering up her earsFranklin Roosevelt, 32nd President of the United States, liked to complain that no one paid attention to what he was saying. He felt as if he were not being heard and because of this, he decided to make an experiment of it.

He was often subjected to long lines at the White House, full of people who would never pay him any mind.

During this receiving line, he murmured to each person a simple sentence;

“I murdered my grandmother this morning.”

All of the guests replied to him with basic responses.

“Marvelous!”
“Keep up the good work.”
“God bless you, Mr President.”

None of them were listening.

Finally, when Roosevelt made it to the end of the receiving line he encountered the ambassador for Bolivia, who leaned over towards the President and whispered, “I’m sure she had it coming.”
