June was on a mid-morning hike with her husband in the local national park. They rounded the corner of the track to a rest area where there was a clearing and toilets. June spotted a young woman sitting on a rock nearby with a pair of binoculars in her hands, looking up at the trees. While her husband went to the toilet, June decided to go over to the woman and introduce herself.
The woman’s name was Kelly, and she happily offered June some tea before going back to watching the trees above them.
“Do you come here often, Kelly?” June asked.
Kelly said. “Yes, I come out most days while my kids are at school.”
“What are you doing, then?” June asked, curious.
“It’s always been my dream to spot an owl in flight,” Kelly said. “I’ve studied books on their ideal habitats, looked at mating calls on YouTube, I’ve researched everything. The people at the wildlife park told me that they nest in this area, but for some reason I’ve just been unable to spot them.”
“That’s a shame,” June said.
Kelly sighed and put her binoculars down. “I’ve been here every day from 8 to 5, waiting to see them,” she said. “I just don’t know what I’m doing wrong.”
“Don’t owls mostly come out at night?” June’s husband said as he sat down with them.
