Matt Berlin, a bowler from Oswego, New York, was just one strike away from a perfect 300 game when the lights went out at Marcel’s Panorama Bowl.
The power outage could have derailed his chances of achieving a rare feat in the sport of bowling, but Matt was determined to see it through. After 50 minutes of waiting for the power to come back on, Matt could wait no more.
Matt took matters into his own hands and enlisted the help of friends with flashlights. The friends strategically positioned themselves, shining their flashlights on the alley. This light meant that Matt could get a glimpse of the path to his potential glory.
Matt took his signature 2 step approach, swung into action, and released the ball with confidence.
Manager Dana Hollister stated that once the ball left Matt’s hand, there was no doubt it was going to be a clean strike.
The flashlights all swung towards the pins as Matt secured his perfect game, with the final strike eliciting cheers and applause from the onlookers. The lights came back on less than a minute later, leaving the onlookers to ponder if it was divine intervention or good luck that allowed Matt to achieve his goal.
Regardless of the reason, Matt’s determination and effort will always be remembered as one of the most memorable moments in the history of Marcel’s Panorama Bowl.
