Old style networking was to go a function, work the room, hand out as many business cards as you could, get as many cards as you can and follow up the next day. Right?

Hard work, horrible, not fun and guess what, it doesn’t work.

We need to go back to what networking should be and used to be!

They were your local “business owner” and they cared. Grocery shop, hardware store, shoe shop etc.

Listen to what your business actually needs
The example above was probably late 50’s / early 60’s but it is still as relevant today! In our really impersonal world, service has once again become king. Real personalised service, not just going through the motions, you have to really care, if you don’t have the passion for what you are doing, move on!
Networking today is about who we are and what we do.

Not just wait for your turn to speak and tell them your story.

You will be amazed at what you will learn and possibly how you can help if you just take the time to listen.

3. Make it About Them NOT You!

Be a giver, not a taker.

The cost of a gift and a loan is the same but a gift has “less stress attached”.

Don’t look at what is in it for me, add value to with your services and help people; before long you will be the “go to” person
for “paying customers” of your particular service.

Everyone feels good when they think they have got more than they paid for. No-one what’s to be ripped off or feel like they are a mug!

4. Build Relationships

Get to know businesses and the services they offer so when you need to refer someone you are confident that the business in question can deliver and deliver well.

By helping people not just “Networking” you will build solid business relationships that will help you both for years to come. Networking, especially business networking is still relevant today and a critical part of business today, you just have to use the right technique to make it work for everyone.
